Never say die

woke up at 6.30am . Left home for uni at 10.00 am. Finished theory for SLAM with one landmark. Decided with all my team mates to stay the whole of next week in the university Hope to simulate it tommorow.Eat one egg hopper. Taekwondo practices at the university was cancelled. So came home at 5.05pm . Started downloading UFC 102. Went for my work out with my cousin to the S D S Jayasinghe park at 6.45pm .
watched dis

and dis tutorial by shihan midori
very informative and educational video. tnkz for uploading OezkanSimsekit
I ran for 13mts for my warm up. Did the usual stretching and side bending and splits. Did 100 pushups.
This time it was 70 knuckle pushups on the rough gravel and 30 palm pushups. Did 50+30 crunches. The latter with my legs raised and contracted.
30 leg raises

and finished with 100 full scots.
Met this loony guy and played football with him and my cousin. Football is a good cardio explosive workout. We played a funny game. 3 players and 3 sides but one goal. The player who completed 3 goals first wud be the winner. It was lots of fun(there was no alternative as only 3 players were their).

Came home at 8.45pm. Had dinner ,washed some dishes and washed my cloths. going to sleep at 10.30 pm.

kyokushin karate fighting techniques kicks

Went to karate at 5.00 .

Today we started by meditating in seiza for 10mts. My ankles were sore. Then fighting techniques. Only did kicks today. The whole two hours from 5.30 - 7.30 pm we did kick and variations. In the final 10 mts we did free fighting.

Variations(in shizentai).
1. Knee kick -front leg/ back leg

2. maegiri - front leg/ back leg

3. knee kick front maegiri back and vice versa

4. maegiri front / mawashigeri back leg and vice versa
5. Maegiri mawashigeri kick (only for advanced belts) in kokutzu dachi

here he first did it for two stages. Then to one count
1. Take the knee straight up (to maegiri position)
2. twist it and do mawashigeri

6.maegiri JUMP and maegiri (The same thing i saw in you tube sosai oyama teaching to midori , and matsui in 1987 summer camp )

7. Mawashigeri JUMP mawashigeri

Then free fighting

Damages

My shin is bloody sore. Infact its a bit swollen. My right ankle joint is swollen and is painful to move. I kicked mawashigeri and opponent blocked it using forearm. And his forearm is ok but my shin and ankle is bad.

Got kicked in the balls after a long time. Medium fast so it did not hurt that much.

I need to work more on my solars.

Shihan said that the tournament is finalized for September 20th. I hope to fight in it.

Back to basics

Today woke up at 6.45am . Didn't get a good nights sleep. felt groggy. But left home to put a appointment with the eye specialist for mom and return the library books. borrowed 4 more books. was at home by 12. watched Harry potter and the order of the pheonix. I enjoy the books a lot more than the films. the films leave nothing to our imagination, so a dreamer like meself gets less satisfaction from watching a film.

Went to karate at 5.15pm .
Today we had foot techniques (ido techniques) . Did variation in zenkutsu dachi. On my way home bought moms medicine from osusala.
Was @ home by 8pm. Had a big dinner. Spent most of the time today reading books. DID NOT STUDY SLAM. But downloaded a whole SLAM site using the IDM grabber.

Sacrifice

Today was one day that i could not work out after a long time. I sacrificed the taekwondo session to be at the gavel club meeting full time. My limbs are screaming for exercise and i am not 100% confident with what i do. Exercise seems to give my mind a boost and freshness which fills me with the motivation to give 100% to everything i do.

Today i got up at 7.00am . Did the SLAM simulation till 9.00 . had a bath and then got my breakfast at 9.30am . Went to uni with my laptop. Was there at 11.00am . Finished the Extended Kalman filter simulation. Now need to move out to real SLAM. The simulation had not worked coz i had done two very stupid mistakes. Need to be more carefull. I guess dat happened coz i did not do it at a stretch but on two different days.
taught my two friends the kalman filter theory and simulation in matlab.
Went to gavel meeting at 5.20 pm.
It was a major success. Awesome attendance. so much so that a lot of freshers were left standing due to not having enough chairs.
The meeting was cheerful and entertaining. This time on the retention rate of the newcomers should be much higher.
Came home at 9.00 .
Uploaded the gavel meeting photos to picasa. Uploaded the CIMA GBC clip and all clips taken from the gavel meeting to youtube. I am very very tired. So goint to sleep early.

Our destiny lies in our hands

Today woke up at 5.00 , made and drank a delicious cup of juicy tea. yum yum. Tried to get some songs into the phone memory card didnt succeed. So put 5 good song to internal memory. Sony k800i suckz with respect to the memory card.
left home at 6.30 to go to galle.

Got onto a 400 bus and got down from moratuwa. Thought of going by train. Time 7.04 .Got a ticket to galle . 85/= . needed to go to loo. Only womens toilets were working so all people go to that toilet. They are in a Very bad condition.

Train(exspress) scheduled arrival 7.23. Came at7.37. got down from galle at 10.00 . Thought of going by train as i hadnt gone by train to galle in more than 10 yrs. It waz kinda fun and relaxing(unlike journey by bus) . The rocking of the train the environment and ofcourse flirting with all the cute hotties in the same carriage. Had to stand for two hours. And with my thigh hurting after yesterdays kumite it was kinda difficult.

Waz at grandmas place by 10.30 . Had breakfast and had a nice chat with all my relatives. kissed my grandma.
Had some nice debates with my uncles regarding bussiness and renewable enrgy. Gave them the idea to use leftover wood to be burned to create electricity to connect their system with a netmetering system.
The visit was good for relationship building. Id say enhanced my image with my relatives.

started return journey at 3.30 (with my parents in their car, dada drove). went to c dads cousins in ginthota. came home at 7.00 .
Dad drove like there is no tommorow got into a arguement bcoz of dat. Then understood how to dissipate tension by not being carried away and saying a funny thing. Funny how that dissipated the tension. Must use that more frequently say something funny to make the conflicting emotions soften.
Had dinner. sleepy no time for matlab. Going to sleep at 10.30pm .

Tommorow

1.Have to call PC park and finish the PC bussiness
2.Finish SLAM algo (no excuses its do or die)

Our work out:
  • single punch
  • double punch two hands
  • double punch one hand
  • 3 punches one hand
  • 4 punches one hand
  • front kick from front leg back leg
  • and some more fighting combos which integrated thuskey(half punch) maegiri and mawashi geri.
  • Then got partnered. And practiced blocking
  • double punch
  • double punch :starting with any hand
  • Here we did count attack inner thigh kick
  • then mawashigeri : double hand block and outer thigh kick counter
  • Final we did some medium fast kumite or free sparing.
  • Started with one side attacking and other side blocking only
  • Then finished with free fighting mind you figting was full contact with no protectors what so ever.
  • That ended the 2 hour kumite session. My thighs, forarms, stomach muscles and shins are paining. the big toe of my right foot is Slightly swollen.
  • I need to fight more and work more on my footwork and conditioning. Each time i fight i can feel myself growing.Today when i became tired i started throwing kicks and punches without aim and hitting air. I should stop this. I also need to be more aggressive. my experience is When we become defensive the attacker will press his attack and gain a mental and physical advantage. So the best defense is offense. Be on the offensive from the word go if i want to be less hurt. That will be my strategy irrespective of the opponent in my future fights.

Scribefire

Scribefire was a tool that i used for blogging frequently. But then came a bug of not being able to upload images using it and i had to revert back to the web blohher interface. Infact in order to upload images we must be logged onto picasa. Else we can't upload. Even then the speed is very low. Have to wait over 3 mts to upload a picture. So i guess its back to the web interface. but may be when no images are involved i will use sf.

Kyokushin: The real test

The toughest karate is kyokushin! this proves it.

This is Kyokushin

Self Discipline

Why do only few people succeed in reaching their dream castles? The answer is they had the required self discipline and the others didnt.

Woke up at 6.05am. Had tea and went to extract the second DV tape from vishvanath mamas camcorder.created 2 video clips from those and uploaded to youtube, then copied the second Dv tape to HD and then copied all the clips and photos to one DVD.
Had a nice bath @ 11.

Went to PC park to get my repaired PC. They had not finished it. This was the 3rd day. So got note from him which tells that he will give the PC on monday.

Came home and had my lunch. Chamara aiyya came to visit and gave me 2 films.

Watched one "Babylon" though i like action  films this film had only action and no story so it sucked. Then i worked on SLAM. solved the bug that perplexed me. I had put two () instead of []. But could not loop it and plot the filtered plot. I have being late on the final year project work. So feel guilty. Dont know what to tell my group mates. Hope to work harder next week.
@ 3 amma thatha and nangi went to galle (to visit grandma). I will join them tommorow. I can't go as i have karate main classes.

FIELD VISIT TO ACE POWER EMBILIPITIYA HEAVY DIESEL POWER PLANT

Report:

Introduction
In response to an increased demand for electricity following a period of continued economic growth Aitken Spence & Co. Ltd. partnered with Caterpillar Power Ventures to create Ace Power Embilipitiya . The result is a state-of-the-art turnkey power plant consisting of fourteen (14) Cat 16CM32engines, manufactured by Caterpillar Motoren Kiel, Germany, generating a total plant output of 100 MW. It started commercial operations from April 2005. The key features of the plant were the high efficiency, relatively low pollution and high degree of automation. With respect to the size of the plant the staff employed was a bare minimum. Though the workload is high they are highly paid and given all comforts of life.

Figure1: Ace power ariel view
The state of art system was constructed modularly at the factory and assembled at Embilipitiya (all components including the control center). The engines have high efficiency and minimum pollution. In fact one of the key things we noticed was the lack of grey exhaust clouds and poisonous fumes that we expected from a gigantic diesel power plant.
The plant supplies the base load therefore works continuously almost 24hours a day around the whole year. The staff is divided into two branches operations and maintenance. Operations workers work 8 hour shifts throughout but the maintenance workers have to only perform scheduled maintenance operations.

Engine room
We started our visit from the engine room which holds the 14 gigantic caterpillar generator sets. The environment there was extremely hot and difficult; it felt like being roasted alive. The room (which is in fact a huge hall) holds the diesel heating, engine cooling, lube oil to oil the engines and exhaust emission systems.

Figure2: Engine room
The plant uses heavy diesel as fuel to produce approximately 100MW capacity of electricity.

Engine specifications
• Engine type: 4-stroke cycle diesel engine
• Cylinder configuration: Vee - 12, 16
• Fuel type: LFO, CRO and HFO up to 700 cSt
• Bore: 320 mm (12.6 in)
• Stroke: 420 mm (16.5 in)
• Cylinder displacement: 33.8 L (2063 cu in)
• Cylinder output: 480 kW (644 bhp)
• Mean piston speed: 10.5 m/s (34.4 ft/s)
• Mean effective pressure: 22.7 bar (329 psig)
• Aspiration: Turbocharged and after-cooled
• Compression ratio: 14.2:1
• Engine rating: 5760–7680 kW
• Generator set rating: 5590–7450 kWe
One of the key features of this engine was that it had a specially designed turbo charger. This was a main component of increasing the efficiency of the engine.
Other specs
Frequency: 750 Hz
Lube Oil Consumption: 0.0013 lb/KWh
One of the most interesting things we were able to see here was one dismantled engine. The engine number 13 had being the first engine to be completely dismantled since its inception in 2005.We were able to see its piston , cylinders as well as the combustion chamber.

Engine cooling unit
The next unit we went to see was the cooling units. Gigantic radiators were mounted in a huge outdoor grid to increase the cooling. All equipment was monitored through a comprehensive control and data acquisition unit to ensure optimum cooling and safety. The PLCs installed at each unit communicated the data through its communication system to the main SCADA.

Figure3: cooling system

Apart from cooling the engine the factory had installed huge fans to cool the engine room as a whole. The huge drafts created by them worked to minimize the temperature and humidity of the engine room.
Safety system and procedures
The company has a special safety engineer just to implement this task. They have special drilled procedures needed to be followed in any given emergency. Given the hazardous nature of the material involved it is imperative that they follow a high safety standard.
We visited the safety system of the plant. It had huge ponds filled with water to ensure safe shutdown and minimum damage in the event of explosion. In fact a separate large compressor had been installed to pressure the hoses.

The water for this purpose was pumped from a nearby well. All electrical systems (substation/transformers) had been installed with special water pressure points to ensure automatic spraying of water (as it is hazardous to be done manually) in the event of a fire.

Figure 4: The fire extinguisher system

Pumping, purification and storage

The next unit was the diesel and HFO pumping plants. In fact here they cleaned the fuels and coolants and also measured the amount of fuel, lubricant and coolant usage. It is of paramount importance to the plant to measure the diesel usage.
The next part was the water purification plant which cleaned the water for usage in the plant for cooling as well as general purposes. Due to the hardness of water it is imperative that the hardness is removed before being used in any process. The quality of machinery and cleanliness was truly impressive.
The diesel and HFO are stored in 1000m3 vessels outside the plant. In the event of fuel deficiency the plant can quickly switch to use HFO as the fuel.

The thermal oil of the plant is very poisonous. Being hot it burns human skin and is also extremely cancerous. Therefore extreme precautions were needed when handling it. Though a large amount of lube oil gets burned the thermal oil is almost not used by the processes, therefore it is only injected about once a year.

Control unit
All processes are controlled from the control center. It houses computers which run the SCADA of the factory all subsystems, processes and process variables are displayed on the screens. It is from here that the engines are turned on/off, VAR changed and monitored to ensure optimum functionality. The hourly KWHs' produced are logged in a database.

Fig 5: Control room
The control center is of the latest technology and integrates state of art fail proof communication systems using Siemens PLCs.
The warning and errors of the system are logged automatically for the operation staff to check on. The high efficiency and round the clock operation is guaranteed because of this highly advanced control system.
The control system also houses the separate control systems of the engines (one for each engine). Here we have the relays and related control circuitry needed to handle the generated extremely high currents.

The control unit also houses the special vacuum powered fuses of the plant. These 11Kv fuses have special mechanism built in when connecting and disconnecting. We were lucky to observe a dislocated fuse which was removed for repairs. The fuses were immense in size and were of very complex design to make sure sparking does not occur.

Electrical system

The generators have a rated output 9,312KVA. This is stepped up to 11kVA and sent to the separate substation yard. Here two huge transformers steps it up to 132KV and connects to the CEB grid where it is metered and the company is paid for generated energy.

Fig 5: Substation

There are two small transformers which converts the grid 11KV to 400V. These provide the power for the plant startup. As the synchronous generators need to be injected current to startup, these transformers take the power from the grid and supply it to the plant to power up the start up processes.

My experiences
The field visit to Embilipitiya Ace power was an experience of a lifetime. We were enlightened about how the industry is structured and what to expect when we go there. This gave me an idea of what skills to develop and what areas to cover in my future academic modules.

To be or not to be

Started the day at 8. Updated the blog till 9.00 . Yesterday planned to have a 1hr punching bag session in the morning. But as premanath mama wanted to get some software installed in his laptop had to postpone it. Having my breakfast at 9.10 .

Premanath mama came @ 9.30 and wanted me to get the videos from his camcorder to my PC. couldn't as he hadn't brought the cable. But copied the stills from his memory card.
He went at 12. I had my lunch and worked a bit on SLAM. I am still running late on SLAM. So need to give it more time.
Whilst doing that i wrote the minutes of the 2nd gavel board meeting. I also blogged abt it and the orientation at the gavel blog. Got two tk domains namely www.gavel.tk and www.gavelblog.tk .
Premanth mama came at 2.30 . I got his first tape to my PC from his camcorder. It took a lot of time and finished at 4.15pm . I drank a delicious cup of tea made by mom and left home for karate practices at 5. I was at the class @ 5.20pm . So i did splits side side bending and knee loint and ankle joint exercises. 30 knuckle push ups. 60 crunches.

Today we have ido techniques (moving)
1. We did moving and punching in zenkutsu dachi
2. reverse punch moving and punching in zenkutsu dachi
3.Kokutzu dachi shoto mawashu uke
4.Kiba dachi punching

My hamstrings are paining because of the stretching, but i am happy as i know that i went beyond my limit.

It was a great work out.
I came home at 7.40 . Had my lunch and tralala after going to the internet time is 10.15pm. So time to go to sleep.

"Time flies while i crawl" so i need to learn flying

Have been doing the same workout for months, so it has become a bit boring as i do it all alone. i don't have a training partner. Did the dips without much trouble with ease, guess i need to increase my repetitions and work on weights. Need to vary more the stomach exercises. Can feel that my calfs and thigh muscles have improved because of the taekwondo drills.
Came home at 9.00 . Went to university to help with the gavel orientation. Was there @ 10.05 .

The three sessions were a major success, well planned and precisely executed. Great work nadeesha.
The orientation ended at 11. Then we had a gavel club board meeting. It went for 2 hours and ended at 1. mentoring for juniors and speak olympiad 2009 were the two points discussed.

Till 1.30 i idlled away my time at the uni.

Then i got to the bus and went to PC park to get my PC. But they said it is still being repaired. So
Came home at 2.30 . Had my lunch . Had two omelets + fish +banana + plain yoghurt.

Played waka waka till 4.00 .
Started the first lesson on physics (electricity) that i am teaching my sister and her friends. Finished the class @ 6.30 . Went to sudat aiyyas place @ 7.00 .

Came home at 7.45pm . Had my dinner. Then went to the internet. Today I Could not work on SLAM (as i went to sudath aiyyas place which was not in the agenda, but having a good social network is a must and need to do small sacrifices to ensure that) . Finally i am gonna sleep now.

perfecting the basics

What did i do today?

omm watched UFC 92, Marley and Me film, played cann stick cricket, played waka waka (pacman) and beat my previous best score.

The cricket match between srilanka and new zealand, second day was interesting. (did not go for a cardio workout in the morning).

In the evening went to karate practices. Today i was early. The whole hour is for kata. (wednesday-kata)

i was early by 30mts. So
  1. i did some stretching
  2. 30 knuckle pushups
  3. 50 crunches
Practices
Started with the normal run(warm up- 5mts)

Then we were asked to get 2 1kg dumbells in each hand.
  1. 3* taiko so (ich ni san)
  2. 3*sokiku taiko (ich ni san) This was a very exhausting workout and i focused on perfecting the basics. Its funny that the more advanced we are more we see the importance of basics. The balance , and moving taught in a kata can be only mastered after years of practice and these are critical points which helps us be good fighters.this workout went for 30 mts . Then the class was divided into two. The brown and green(grading) and black belts were taught at one side whilst the rest including me were taught in another.

This session was for begginers. All the taiko katas were practiced and the session finished with pinan sono ich.

The important thing i learnt was the use of dumb bells. After practicing with it for 30mts, we were told to keep them. Then when doing punches with my bare hands , i was able to feel a awesome lightness. This helped me to speed my punch and put a lot more power onto my punches. I need to get 2 dumbells and practice on my own punching bag.
Speed is critical in punching as the opponent will always move and if we are not fast enough we will only be able to hit air. Practicing punching with dumbells will be a key factor for me as a karateka.

night

The gavel club orientation will be held 2morrow. so i will be going to it. The president erangi asked me to bring my laptop. after much deliberation sunera agreed to bring his laptop.

Tommorow

  5. sleep early
I am going to sleep. time is 10.41 pm

good night friends!

Decided to update blog daily

its kind of strange how time flies by and suddenly we come to realize that we have missed a lot.

So in order to keep myself updated and ready, i have decided to update my blog daily. (Just the it is almost 2months into the final year project and i haven't achieved a significant breakthrough whilst i have been conditioning my self 4 da brown belt gradings but still i am not 100% fit.)

i will use the blog as a journal to get an idea of what i have achieved and how to achieve my objectives.

So from here on i will open my self to the world.

Foot techniques training session

Thought that the karatekas would like to know how the training in goes in our Dojo.

The style is kyokushin and shihan nanda siriwardena is the chief instructor.

Usual instructor for this session is sensei pasindu makalanda who represented srilanka for the world open tournament held in 2007.
The day is monday from 6pm-7pm (one hour) the whole session is focused on kicks.
we start with warm ups. It consists of a 5 minute run around the dojo.

Then comes streching. It starts with splits and goes to side to side bending. then we go up and down in seiza and bend backwards to lie on the floor (legs in seiza).

Then we go for 50 middle punches in migi sanchin dachi. then 50 maegiri in heiko dachi.

Then the workout starts on kicks.

Stance is heiko dachi with the hands up. (not on the belt)
  1. 100 Mae keage (front stretch kick)
  2. 100 yoko keage (side stretch kick)
  3. 100 hiza geri (knee kick)
  4. 100 maegiri ( chudan)
  5. 100 soto mawashigeri (outside inside kick)
  6. 100 Uchi mawashigeri (inside outside kick)
  7. 100 yoko geri chudan (side kick middle)
  8. 100 mawashigeri jordan(some times done 2 two counts ich-hip rotated and positioned , ni - leg streched; sometimes for one count)
  9. 50 Ushiro mawashi geri (reverse roundhouse kick) sometimes to two counts ich turn, ni kick
ofcourse after each set we jodge a bit and jump to relax our body. then 2 nugare and ibuki. that is all the rest we get in between.

i have started cross training my kyokushin with taekwondo and see a great speed advantage in taekwondo.
The thing is they r very very fast (lots of drills are done to strenthen legs and hips) though their impact strenth and conditioning is very low due to ignoring the self defense aspect and concentrating on the sports - semi contact aspect. But i hope to train more on taekwon to help with my karate kicking. (jumping kicks in taekwon is awesome and i specially like the turning back kick)

IEEE R10 sb conference - STUDENT BRANCH HONORING CEREMONY

This paragraph caught my eye

"The awarding ceremony was followed by a highly inspirational and motivational presentation by Mrs. Mini.S.Thomas on ‘Why should we love IEEE’. She, with the friendly air of a mentor and charm of a powerful orator, stressed on the importance of IEEE as a forum for networking and establishing contacts. She emphasised on the importance of management and leadership skills in today’s world and said that working with committment and no selfish motive will lead us to success always. The session concluded with this message. The function was really a great experience and motivation to the budding volunteers of the college."

Now for the pics of my new friend hope this dogi will last as much as my 2nd one.
(The old gi is in a photo for the last time :( )

Brazilian Kick

well a real pretty kick to look at.

Kancho, shihan filho uses this with superb effect. what a faking kick, maegiri shown but mawashigeri jordan kicked!

here is a rare video tutorial i found at http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f11/kyokushin-high-kick-technique-help-1026917/ teaching how to do it, mind u v need to have lot of hip flexibility and power to use this effectively.

"Sorry I dont know of any good tutorials online for kicking it with the front leg, however the basic technique is to push forward the hip of the backleg before you start moving the front leg kick, pulling back leg hip backward again while pivoting on the back leg foot. That way you get extra distance and speed.

Feitosa can stop the kick in the "hit" position without doing the full turn and follow trough afterward. That takes incredible flexibility and lots of training, but the basics of the kick is the same.

Oh, and the traditional target is the side of the neck, not the head -which is why it is called a kubi geri (neck kick) in japanese. sometimes it is called tate kubi mawashi geri, or as DaCosta in the top video calls it, Mae mawashi kubi geri (it has many different names in japanese)." says http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f11/kyokushin-high-kick-technique-help-1026917/
